Europe’s largest functioning Hindu temples, the Shri Venkateswara (Balaji)

From humble beginnings half a century ago, the Shri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple has grown to become the largest Hindu temple of its kind in the UK and Europe. Today, it welcomes nearly half a million devotees and visitors each year, including over 10,000 students from schools, colleges, and universities who come for guided tours.
The temple’s journey began in the late 1970s, when a group of Hindu immigrants from the Indian subcontinent envisioned creating a sanctuary for prayer and meditation, inspired by the famous Venkateswara Temple in Tirupathi, South India. Initially, the group held monthly community prayers at the Shri Geeta Bhawan Mandir in Handsworth, Birmingham. In 1980, a deity of Lord Venkateswara was installed in an intricately carved wooden Mandapam, marking the start of regular pujas, which eventually became a weekly Sunday tradition.
This temple, now a vital spiritual and cultural hub, continues to serve as a place of devotion and learning for visitors from all over the world.
